the locality

Aldeburgh is a small unspoilt seaside town with its social and economic history closely linked to the sea and the nearby river Alde. The town, which sits on a colourful shingle beach stretching to the north and south, still retains a distinct Victorian charm. Today as then, it happily accomodates an influx of holiday visitors, music fans, sporting enthusiasts or those simply seeking a breath of sea air and a change of pace.

Activities

Each June the town hosts the internationally acclaimed Aldeburgh Festival of Music initiated by the late Benjamin Britten. The main concert hall is in Snape (10 minute's drive from the apartment). Aldeburgh also hosts annual literary, poetry and documentary film festivals.

For the outdoor enthusiast:

  • Safe sea bathing, or for the less hardy, indoor swimming at the nearby Leiston Leisure centre
  • Golf on Aldeburgh's championship course and the equally challenging course at Thorpeness
  • Tennis on the town's public tennis courts or at Thorpeness Country Club
  • Sailing or river cruises on the River Alde
  • Bird watching on reserves at North Warren (150 yards from apartment), Minsmere and Havergate Island
  • Stretching walks from the front door along the beach, beside the river and over heathlands
  • Cycle hire on the High Street

There are many pubs and good restaurants serving fresh fish and other local delicacies. The locally brewed Adnams beer should not be missed.

Places of interest within short walking distance: The 16th century Moot Hall which still serves as the town hall and is also the home of the town's fascinating museum. The Royal National Lifeboat Station, housing the state of the art Aldeburgh lifeboat. England's most northerly Martello tower on the Slaughden shingle bank just south of the town. The Maggi Hambling “Scallop shell sculpture” commemorating the life of Benjamin Britten.
